Example 1
To see only rows where column SRC contains items INV or BANK A.
Both items reside in the same column. In this case, we can use Custom AutoFilter because it will look for items (more than one) under one (same) column.
1. Follow steps 1 to 3 in Example 1 under Using Simple AutoFilter.
2. Click the small arrow which appears on the right side of column titled SRC.
3. From the list that appears, click Custom (This is why we call this Custom Filtering).
4. A dialog titled Custom AutoFilter will appear:
Custom AutoFilter Show rows where: SRC equals ▼ BANK A ▼ ⊚ And ● Or equals ▼ INV. ▼ Use? to represent any single character. Use * to represent any series of characters. OK Cancel
5. Set the dialog box as shown above. The above setting reads:
Show rows where column SRC contains the item 'BANK A' OR 'INV'.
Make sure you select the Or option.
6. Click OK.
You should see the expected result. Only rows where the column SRC contains INV. or BANK A will be visible. The other rows will be hidden.
NOTE
The above filtering operation may seem illogical but it shows how custom filtering is used.
Example 2
To see only rows of data of a particular period in column DATE.
Say we want to select a period from column DATE and only rows of data in that period will be visible. In this case, we can use Custom AutoFilter to look for items (more than one) in one column.
1. Follow steps 1 to 3 in Example 1 under Using Simple AutoFilter.
2. Click the small arrow which appears on the right side of column titled DATE.
3. A list will appear.
4. Click Custom.
5. A dialog titled Custom AutoFilter will appear.
6. Set the dialog box as follows:
Custom AutoFilter Show rows where: DATE is greater than or equal to ▼ 1/1/2001 ▼ ⊚ And ● Or is less than or equal to ▼ 1/31/2001 ▼ Use ? to represent any single character Use * to represent any series of characters OK Cancel
124
This setting reads:
Show rows where item in DATE column is greater than or equal to 01-Jan-01 AND is less than or equal to 31-Jan-01.
Make sure you select option And. If you select Or, all dates beyond 1/1/2001 will be shown and all dates before 1/31/2001 will be shown as well. The use of option And will restrict the dates to those between the two set dates.)
7. Click OK.
You should see only of rows of data which the period in column DATE is as set. The other rows are hidden.
